India’s Khushbu Rajakbhai and Dhinidhi Desinghu enjoyed memorable outings at the Youth Olympic Games on Monday, securing silver and bronze medals respectively in judo and swimming.

Khushbu, 15, finished second in the women’s 63kg judo event after losing to Germany’s Jolina Reinhold by ippon in just 48 seconds. The Gujarat judoka had produced an impressive run to reach the final but was unable to overcome the Cadet world champion in the gold-medal bout.

Her silver made her only the second Indian judoka to win a medal at the Youth Olympic Games. Thangjam Tababi Devi was the first, claiming silver in the women’s 44kg category at the 2018 edition in Buenos Aires.

A gold medal would have also placed Khushbu among an exclusive group of Indian Youth Olympic champions. Pistol shooters Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary, along with weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga, are the only Indians to have won gold at the competition, all achieving the feat in 2018.

Khushbu began her campaign with a 1-0 yuko victory over Guinea’s Mamaissata Camara in the round of 16. She then defeated Morocco’s Abir Bouazzaoui by ippon in the quarterfinals before securing her place in the final with another ippon win over Algeria’s Dounia Berrahoual. Her semifinal opponent was also disqualified after receiving a Hansoku-make, judo’s most serious penalty.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old swimmer Dhinidhi added another international medal to her growing list of achievements, claiming bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle.

The Bengaluru swimmer clocked 56.27 seconds to finish third in the final. Croatia’s Ana Bobanovic won gold in 55.89 seconds, while New Zealand’s Alyssa Lawson took silver with a time of 56.13 seconds.

Dhinidhi had entered the final in impressive form, topping her heat in 56.80 seconds to qualify third-fastest overall. Only Bobanovic, who clocked 56.22 seconds, and Lawson, who finished in 56.53 seconds, were quicker during the heats.
