Kylian Mbappe failed to score from the spot for France in their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match against Morocco on Thursday (July 9). Les Bleus were awarded a penalty for a foul on Mbappe inside Morocco’s penalty box by defender Noussair Mazraoui, but the 27-year-old forward failed to score from the spot.
Mbappe, who has scored seven goals for France in this year’s tournament, took the shot from the spot, but his tame effort was saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Yassine Bounou made the correct guess and moved to his left to deny Mbappe from giving France a 1-0 lead.
The clip of Mbappe’s penalty miss is now going viral on the internet.
Had Mbappe managed to score from the spot, he would have extended his tally of goals to eight in FIFA World Cup 2026 and 20 in the tournament’s history.
Mbappe fifth player to miss penalty in FIFA World Cup
27-year-old Mbappe is the fifth player to miss a penalty (excluding shootouts) in this year’s FIFA World Cup. Argentina’s Lionel Messi has missed two penalties in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães also failed to score from the spot in the first half of their Round of 16 match against Norway at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Mbappe – youngest to make 20 FIFA World Cup appearances
Mbappe entered his name in the history books on Thursday (Friday IST) by becoming the youngest player in the world to play 20 matches in the FIFA World Cup. The first quarterfinal of FIFA World Cup 2026 between France and Morocco at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Thursday is Mbappe’s 20th match in the FIFA World Cup.
He made his FIFA World Cup debut for Les Bleus in 2018 and has featured in every match for them since then.
Mbappe is 27 years and 201 days old on July 9. The previous youngest player in the world to make 20 FIFA World Cup appearances was Wladislaw Zmuda of Poland. Wladislaw Zmuda was 28 years and 34 days old when he played his 20th FIFA World Cup match for Poland.
