Liverpool FC will play Como 1907 twice in the space of a single day at Anfield on Sunday, a quirk of pre-season scheduling that has now become an annual routine for the club.
Rather than a straight friendly, clubs sometimes arrange two matches on the same date when they want more players to get minutes without cramming an extra travel day into an already packed summer calendar.
The first game will be played behind closed doors with no crowd. It is largely a chance for fringe players and academy prospects to get a run-out.
The second, played in front of a full house, is the ‘real’ fixture with the senior squad on show. Liverpool have now done this for three summers running, having previously held same-day doubles against Athletic Bilbao and, before that, Sevilla and Las Palmas.
Andoni Iraola’s side head into the game looking for their first clean pre-season result in some time, having surrendered two-goal leads in back-to-back defeats to Leeds United and Monaco, the latter marking the manager’s first match at Anfield.
Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak were among the bright spots in that Monaco defeat. New defensive loan signing Ronald Araujo, who arrived from Barcelona last week, is in line to feature for the first time.
Liverpool remain without Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jayden Danns, Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley through injury. Concerns remain on the Merseysiders’ overall depth and adaptability to Iraola’s rigorous system, and with the jury still out on the recruitment for forwards, especially a replacement for Mo Salah.
Cesc Fabregas’s Como arrive on the back of a battling 1-1 draw at Arsenal, a game they lost on penalties, and go into the fixture as a club on the rise after finishing fourth in Serie A last season to book their first-ever Champions League campaign. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
Como looked quite sharp against the Premier League champions but were caught out playing out from the back
