Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain has said that although she didn’t have much expectation of her Asian Games campaign, she wanted to live every moment, adding that she had to be mentally strong and that her experience eventually counted in tackling her opponents.
Lovlina said that her immediate target is the 2027 World Championships, where she hopes to bag Olympic qualification at the first chance.
Lovlina is confident that with proper preparation, she can upgrade her Olympic bronze from 2020 to gold at the next Games.
“The fights were tough. I didn’t have much expectation, but I wanted to live every moment. I had to be mentally strong and I think my experience also counted in tackling my opponents,” Lovlina said while speaking at a felicitation ceremony in Guwahati.
“Hard work and struggles are always there. But I feel that blessings count a lot. And not all players are as lucky as me to get so much love,” Lovlina added.
Lovlina enjoyed a memorable campaign at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, winning gold in the women’s 75kg category. She started her campaign with a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the quarter-finals, bagging a medal and advancing to the semi-finals.
Lovlina beat Kazakhstan’s reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely fought split decision in the semi-finals. The victory made her the first Indian woman boxer to reach two Asian Games finals, having also made the title bout at Hangzhou 2022.
Lovlina beat reigning Asian champion Bao Ziyi of China 5-0 in the 75kg final on Friday, celebrating her 29th birthday with the gold medal. The win improved on her silver from the 2022 Asian Games, where she lost the final to China’s Li Qian.
Lovlina became just the second Indian woman boxer to win Asian Games gold after MC Mary Kom, who achieved the feat in 2014. Her win ended India’s 12-year wait for another women’s boxing champion at the Asian Games.
