The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on Friday clarified that no topics have been dropped from the draft Class 9 Mathematics syllabus, saying several concepts that appeared to be missing as standalone chapters have instead been integrated across other chapters.

The council also stressed that the syllabus currently in circulation is a draft and will be finalised after feedback from teachers, students and educators. The final Class 9 Mathematics syllabus is expected to be released in October after considering the feedback.

Addressing concerns over specific topics, NCERT said key concepts related to Lines and Angles are introduced in the Grade 6 Ganita Prakash textbook and continue in Class 9 through chapters on Proportionality and Theorems. Quadrilaterals are covered in Chapter 12, while concepts related to Euclidean geometry, including polygons, circles, parallel lines and intersecting lines, are covered across multiple chapters.

NCERT said it decided, following consultations with teachers and educators, not to retain a separate abstract chapter focused on axioms, theorems and proofs. Instead, these concepts will be introduced across different chapters to help students understand their application.

The draft syllabus also includes a chapter on algorithms. NCERT said the growing use of Artificial Intelligence makes it important for students to understand mathematical concepts related to algorithms, data structures and running-time efficiency. The move is linked to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s emphasis on computational thinking.

Two More Class 9 Textbooks Announced

The syllabus clarification comes as NCERT has announced two more Class 9 textbooks for the 2026-27 academic session — Ganita Manjari – Part 2, the Mathematics textbook, and Understanding Society: India & Beyond – Part 2, the Social Science textbook, reported ANI.

According to NCERT, Ganita Manjari – Part 2 has been available for sale from September 21, while the Social Science textbook will be available from September 30. The books will be sold through NCERT sales counters, its website and Amazon.

NCERT has stated that the books are being released according to the approved schedule as part of the phased implementation of the revised curriculum under NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
