JNU student and All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora has drawn national attention following protests against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. Photos and videos of her jumping police barricades, evading police personnel and being detained during the demonstrations have circulated widely on social media.

Her growing public profile has also sparked interest in her educational background and journey from Uttarakhand to student politics. Here is a look at what Neha Bora is studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and how she entered politics.

Neha Bora hails from Khatima in Uttarakhand. According to media reports, her father serves in the Indian Army, and frequent transfers meant that she spent her childhood in different cities and army camps across the country.

Neha completed her Class 10 and Class 12 education in West Bengal. According to reports, she has credited her school years with helping shape her ideological and political outlook. During this period, she developed an interest in the ideas and writings of communist and revolutionary thinker Charu Majumdar, poet Pablo Neruda and writer Arundhati Roy, reported News18 Hindi.

After completing her graduation from Delhi University, Neha pursued a master’s degree in Performance Studies at Dr B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi.

She later enrolled in a PhD programme in Theatre and Performance Studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is currently a doctoral scholar at the university.

Alongside her academic work, Neha has been involved in theatre. She has worked with Sangwari, a Delhi-based street theatre group, and has participated in performances addressing social and political issues.

Neha’s involvement in politics grew during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests of 2019–20. Her engagement with theatre, campus discussions and social issues contributed to her decision to become active in student politics.

She joined the All India Students’ Association (AISA), a left-wing student organisation that campaigns on issues including education, student rights and social justice. She subsequently became the organisation’s national president.

Her journey from theatre and academic research to student activism has brought renewed attention to her work, educational background and role in campus politics.
