One of our families favorite kurma or curry is this simple peas kurma. You need simple ingredients that you already have on hand to make this pattani curry. This version is not like the one which you get in hotels or restaurants.

I always have a bag of green peas in my freezer to make quick dinner. It doesn’t need tomatoes, coconut. It is my version and one of the most loved recipe by my viewers.
About Peas Kurma
Kurma is one of the most popular curry that is served mainly in restaurants all over South of India. It is usually made with coconut and cashew base and is so flavourful. This kurma is made with peas and takes only 30 minutes to make.
Peas kurma also known as pattani kurma, pachai pattani kurma. This version of kurma is made with onions, fennel seeds, ginger, garlic, cashews and cinnamon as base. I used simple spice powders like chilli, coriander, turmeric and garam masala powder to flavour the curry.
This curry turns out super creamy and goes well with idli, dosa, idiyappam, ragi roti or pulao.

Pattani kurma is super easy to make. You start by sauteing onions, ginger, garlic, fennel seeds, cinnamon and cashews in oil. Once sauted we grind them to a paste. This form the base of the kurma.
To make my life easier, I used frozen green peas which I always have in my freezer. Add the peas, spice powders to the paste along with water, seasonings and boil for few more minutes.
This peas kurma is made without tomatoes, yogurt and coconut. So you need to add a bit of lemon juice for the tangy taste. Never skip that. We enjoyed it with chapati. But it is best with appam.

Ingredients
- Green peas – I used frozen green peas for this curry. You can use fresh green peas as well.
- Onions – onion forms base for the kurma. saute and grind to a smooth paste.
- Whole Spices – I used fennel seeds and cinnamon for the aroma of the kurma.
- Ginger and Garlic – chopped ginger and garlic is sauted with onions to form the base of the kurma.
- Spice Powders – I used chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and garam masala powder to f’avour the curry.
- Cashews – cashews is ground with onions to add creamy texture to the curry.
- Seasoning – add salt and sugar to taste for this curry.
- Oil – I used coconut oil for this curry. you can use any oil of choice.
- Lemon – one main ingredient for this kurma is lemon juice. Lemon juice is very important in this curry, you need the tangyness for taste.

Step by Step Pictures
Kurma paste
1)Start by making the masala paste. Heat oil in a pan, add in fennel seeds, cinnamon, ginger, garlic and stir fry for 1 minute.

2)Add in onions, cashews and saute for 2 minutes until onions get slightly translucent.

3)This is the colour you are looking for.

4)Now cool this down completely. Take this mixture in a blender.

5)Grind this to a smooth paste.

Making Kurma
6)Now in the same pot, add in 3 tablespoon oil and allow it to get hot. Reduce the heat to low and add in turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Stir this for 5 seconds.

7)Add in the ground onion paste and stir into the spices.

8)Cook this for 2 minutes with the spices.

9)Pour in enough water to form the gravy. Add in green peas. I am using frozen thawed green peas.

10)Season with salt, sugar and mix well.

11)Bring it to a full boil, cover and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until the green peas is cooked.

12)Now take it off the heat, add in lemon juice and coriander leaves.

13)Mix well. Thats it peas kurma is ready.

14)Serve with poori, idiyappam or roti.


Expert Tips
- I used frozen green peas so cooked the kurma for just 5 to 6 minutes. If you are using fresh peas, then cook until the peas is cooked.
- Instead of cashews, you can use almonds as well.
- Once you add the spice powders in oil, saute just for 5 seconds so the spice powders doesn’t burn.
- Lemon juice is very important in this curry, you need the tangyness for taste.
Storage and Serving
Peas kurma taste amazing with pulao, chapati, roti, idiyappam or appam. You can even serve it with bread. Leftover kurma can be stored in fridge for upto 2 days. Reheat before serving.

Q: Can I skip cashews in this kurma?
You can use almonds, melon seeds instead of cashews. It adds thickness to the curry.
Q: Can I use coconut in this kurma?
If you want, you can add some fresh coconut into the ginger garlic when sauteing and grind to smooth paste.
Q: What other vegetable can i add in this kurma?
You can use potato, mixed vegetables, mushrooms, paneer in this curry.
