The Irish fast-fashion retailer continues to advance its refurbishment programme across the Iberian Peninsula. Primark has reopened its store at the Espacio Mediterráneo shopping centre in Cartagena, Spain following a comprehensive refurbishment. Opened in 2013 as Primark’s first store in the city and its second in the Region of Murcia, the revamp forms part of the brand’s growth strategy in Spain and Portugal, backed by a total investment of €85 million.

“We are delighted to welcome customers to our newly refurbished store at the Espacio Mediterráneo shopping centre in Cartagena. Every enhancement, from the refreshed décor to the introduction of self-service checkouts, has been designed with our customers and colleagues in mind to further enhance the in-store experience,” said Esther de las Heras, sales director at Primark Iberia, while thanking the company’s team for “their effort, dedication and commitment to this project.”
The store, which offers 3,500 square metres of retail space across two floors, now showcases the company’s latest store concept, with refreshed décor, new signage, updated window displays, and refurbished fitting rooms. It also features seven self-service checkouts, allowing customers to choose between these and traditional staffed tills, while continuing to offer its full range of fashion, beauty, home, and leisure products.
With this update, the company has now refurbished 20 stores in Spain over the past two years. As part of this plan, the company intends to modernise a further 10 stores in locations such as Fuengirola, Pamplona, Roquetas de Mar, Santander, Santiago de Compostela, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Zaragoza. Of the total of €85 million earmarked for Spain and Portugal, around €40 million is allocated to the Spanish market, where the group currently operates a network of 68 stores.
Founded in 1969 in Dublin under the name Penneys, Primark is part of the Associated British Foods group and operates in 18 countries through a network of more than 470 stores, with the aim of reaching 530 stores globally by the end of its 2026 financial year. According to its latest published annual results, the chain recorded sales of £9.5 billion during its 2025 financial year.
