PV Sindhu is set to return to badminton’s biggest season-ending tournament after the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed her qualification for the World Tour Finals on Wednesday. The competition will be held in Hangzhou, China, from December 9-13, marking the star shuttler’s sixth appearance at the prestigious event.

Sindhu will face a familiar group of top contenders, including South Korea’s An Se Young, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, and China’s Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yu Fei, who have also secured their places in the tournament.

The World Tour Finals, organised in non-Thomas Cup years, features the top eight players or pairs in the year-end world rankings.

With five women’s singles berths already confirmed, the competition for the remaining three places is still underway.

Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki and Nozomi Okuhara, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon and Pornpawee Chochuwong, Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani and Denmark’s Line Christophersen are among those still in contention.

For Sindhu, this will be her first appearance to the season-ending championships since 2021.

Although she had earned a place in the 2022 edition, an injury forced her to withdraw from the competition.

Sindhu is the only Indian to have won the BWF World Tour Finals women’s singles title, having beaten Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 final.

Her latest qualification follows a series of impressive results this season, particularly her triumph at the Hylo Open.

The Super 500 victory earned Sindhu 9,200 ranking points, helping her climb two positions to sixth in the latest BWF World Rankings.

The Hylo Open title was her second BWF World Tour crown of the year, following her victory at the Japan Open Super 750 in July. That triumph in Japan was also her first individual title since December 2024.

With the latest success, Sindhu’s career tally of BWF World Tour titles has risen to seven.

She had also reached the French Open final ahead of the Hylo Open but fell short against South Korea’s An Se-young, the world No. 1 and reigning Olympic and World champion.

The season has been particularly noteworthy for Sindhu, as it is the first time since 2022 that she has collected multiple BWF World Tour titles in a single year.

Following her successful campaign at the Hylo Open, Sindhu opted to withdraw from the Korea Open and Japan Masters. The decision was aimed at giving herself time to rest, recover and build fitness ahead of the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.
