What is Sattu?
But first what is sattu? Everybody is searching for high protein meals and protein shake these days. But did you know that there is one desi ingredient in our kitchen which is high in protein. Yes it is none other than our humble ‘Sattu‘. Around 2 tablespoon Sattu flour (20 – 30 grams sattu flour) has 5 to 7 grams of protein.
Sattu is nothing but a traditional Indian flour made by grinding dry-roasted black chickpeas (kala chana or bengal gram) with their husk or skin still intact to a fine powder.
It is popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and parts of West Bengal used in many Indian dishes like this sattu chilla, sattu ladoo. Sattu is consumed more for its cooling properties and is consumed during summer.

Homemade Sattu flour
Even though you can buy sattu in stores these days easily. Making sattu flour at home is super easy. We like to buy whole sattu (dry roasted black chana) in bulk, because my husband like to snack on those.
Whenever we buy whole sattu, I powder half of it to make sattu drink. Sattu drink is considered high protein, so I like to call them Desi protein shake.
Even though whole sattu is already roasted black chana, I like to roast them for few minutes to make them aromatic and nutty before blending. Make sure you blend the sattu with their skins still on. Because most of the nutrients like fiber and minerals are present in the shell.
Homemade sattu flour is affordable, clean and more natural.

My Salty Sattu Drink Recipe (Super Refreshing and Extra protein)
You can make sattu drink sweet or salty depending on your taste. There are so many different recipes for both sweet and salty. Also the spices which I used like roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, black salt compliments the flavour perfectly.

Sweet Sattu Sharbat (Taste more like Jal Jeera)
