Steve Smith achieved a major milestone during Australia’s first Test against South Africa in Durban on Friday, surpassing former captain Steve Waugh to become Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. Smith crossed Waugh’s tally of 10,927 runs during his innings, adding another record to his illustrious career. He now has only Allan Border and Ricky Ponting ahead of him on Australia’s all-time Test run-scoring list. The landmark came as Australia recovered after losing early wickets against South Africa.

Smith reached the milestone after scoring 25 runs in the opening Test of the series. He moved past Waugh, who finished his Test career with 10,927 runs in 168 matches. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting remains at the top of the list with 13,378 runs, while Allan Border is in second place with 11,174 runs. This achievement places Smith alongside some of the greatest batters in Australian cricket history.

The landmark also highlights Smith’s consistency in the longest format. Since making his Test debut in 2010, he has established himself as one of Australia’s most reliable batters, known for his technique and ability to score runs under pressure. However, Smith’s innings came during a challenging start for Australia in Durban. They lost early wickets and needed their middle order to stabilise the innings against South Africa’s potent bowling attack.

Smith’s achievement adds another chapter to his remarkable Test career as Australia continue their campaign in South Africa. With Ricky Ponting and Allan Border still ahead of him, Smith has further milestones to chase as he continues to build on his impressive record in international cricket.
