World Championships bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela shoved aside their disappointing outing at the Asian Games to beat fifth-seeded and World No. 10 Indonesian pair of Rachel Rose and Febi Setianingrum 21-16, 21-17 to move into the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open.

This was the first time Treesa and Gayatri were facing this Indonesian duo but were considered the underdogs ahead of the match, at least in terms of rankings.

But Treesa and Gayatri, who have over the past two to three months defeated several higher-ranked pairs, continued their streak to now get the better of the fifth-seeded Indonesians.

The Indonesians had finished as semifinalists at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 in June. But they were up against an Indian duo that had won the World Championships bronze medal at home two months back.

The result would come as a massive relief for badminton fans across the country, who have only been disappointed over the past two days.

Lakshya Sen went down to third seed Chou Tien Chen in a three-game encounter, while double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu suffered a three-game loss to Yvonne Li on the opening day of the Denmark Open.

India’s struggles continued on Day 2 of the Denmark Open, with Ayush Shetty going down to Alwi Farhan in three games. Third seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also suffered a three-game loss to China’s He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu.

Unnati Hooda lost to Han Qiang Xi in three games, while Devika Sihag was defeated in straight games by eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong.

India’s campaign suffered further setbacks on Thursday, Day 3 of the Denmark Open, as Kidambi Srikanth went down to reigning world champion Alex Lanier in three games, while Ashmita Chaliha suffered a straight-game loss to third seed Akane Yamaguchi.

Both defeats came before Treesa and Gayatri bagged their victory over the Indonesians. Later in the day, Tanvi Sharma will take on Yvonne Li in India’s final encounter of the day.
