Bhavikkumar Bharwad was disqualified from the men’s 400m T47 final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Thursday, losing the silver medal he had initially secured after a second-lane infringement.
Bharwad clocked 49.31 seconds to finish second behind compatriot Dilip Mahadu Gavit (T46), who clinched gold in 48.27 seconds. However, Bharwad was disqualified after the race for a TR18.2 (c) violation, relating to a lane infringement.
Japan’s Kakeru Ishida, who had originally finished third in 49.58 seconds, was subsequently elevated to second place to claim silver. Uzbekistan’s Marufjon Murodulloev and Sri Lanka’s Saman Subasinghe were awarded joint bronze after both recorded an identical season-best time of 50.03 seconds.
Gavit Wins Another Gold
While Bharwad’s disqualification altered the final standings, Gavit secured his second gold medal at the ongoing Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya. He had earlier won the men’s 100m T47 event in 10.69 seconds, with compatriot Basil (T47) taking silver in 10.72 seconds and setting a new Games record.
Gavit’s victory in the 100m T47 event marked India’s 20th gold medal at the ongoing Games, underlining the contingent’s strong performance.
The Maharashtra-born athlete had also won gold in the men’s 400m T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, earning India its historic 100th medal at the competition. He later reached the final of the same event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Gavit hails from Toran Dongari, a small village near Nashik in Maharashtra, where he grew up in a modest farming family. His life changed dramatically when he suffered a fall from a tree at the age of five or six, severely injuring his right arm. Despite this early setback, he went on to establish himself as a prominent name in Indian para-athletics.
