The Porsche 911 Carrera and BMW M4 Competition differ vastly in their powertrain specs and performance. Adding to the contrast, the 911 is rear-engined, while the M4 Competition features a front-engine layout. The M4 produces significantly more power and torque with its 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine making 530hp and 650Nm, compared to the 911’s flat six, which makes 136hp and 200Nm less.

In terms of gearbox, the Porsche uses an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which sends the output to the rear wheels only. The BMW comes with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, but it’s also fitted with a 4WD system (with an RWD mode) as standard, contributing a lot to the higher 1,850kg weight than the Porsche’s 1,520kg.

M4’s higher engine outputs result in faster claimed acceleration, doing the 0 to 100kph sprint in 3.5 seconds, while the 911 takes 4.1 seconds (or 3.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package). The M4 Competition reaches 0 to 200kph in 11.8 seconds, also quicker than the 911 Carrera’s 14.4 seconds (or 14.1 with Sport Chrono). However, the 911 Carrera has a higher top speed of 294kph, while the M4 Competition is electronically limited to 250kph (290kph with the M Driver’s Package, but still less than the Porsche).
