Apple crumble is one of the recipe you could ever make. Recently I got a craving for apple crumble and wanted to bake it. This is one recipe which I can rely on. It is simple to make but taste absolutely spectacular.

The topping which I made is purely based on my taste, I made it moderately sweet because I don’t like recipes which are too sweet. Specially when we are going to serve it with vanilla ice cream.

Apple crumble is also known as apple crisp, the only difference is apple crisp has added oatmeal. But I made this without oatmeal because that is how I like it. When apples are in season, this is a great recipe to try. Just like my apple pie and apple cake.

To make this apple crumble I used apples, flour, sugar, butter, flavourings like salt and cinnamon and vanilla. Just basic ingredients that you already have on hand.

It is really important to use good juicy, crisp apples for this recipe. Because you want the apples to stand out for this. You don’t want some mushy and disintegrated apples all over the dish. Best apples for making crumble are granny smith, red delicious, honey crisp, fuji or gala.

And it is really important to served this warm apple crumble with cold vanilla ice cream. I asked hubby to get me some ice cream when I started to make this. He too got me the best quality ice cream. Each spoonful was like heaven.

Both crumble and filling required no cooking, just mix together in a bowl. Apple fillings are added in a bowl and mixed together. Crumble topping is mixed together in another bowl. The cool thing is, you can make double batch of crumble and store it in freezer so you can make this dish whenever you want.

I like to add some plain flour to my apples, because it absorbs the juices from the apple and make it slightly thick and jam like. Else the apple filling may be too liquidy.

I dot few butter cubes over the apple filling, because most recipes tops the crumble with butter. But there is no point in that because there is enough butter in crumble to make it crispy. I like how the butter mixes with the sugar in apple and create almost a caramel like sauce.

Ingredients

  • Apples – best apple for making crumble are granny smith, red delicious, honey crisp, fuji or gala. Peel and chop them into bite size pieces.
  • Plain Flour – AP flour is used in filling and topping as well.
  • Butter – cold butter is used in making crumble and filling as well.
  • Brown Sugar – Some recipe uses granulated sugar , but I like brown sugar for its caramel like taste.
  • Vanilla Extract – a dash of vanilla truly enhances the taste.
  • Ground Cinnamon – cinnamon adds to crumble topping as well as filling.
  • Baking powder – a little amount of baking powder lightens the crumble and makes it super crispy.
  • Lemon Juice – a dash of lemon juice adds to a balanced taste.
  • Salt – a pinch of salt balance the taste.

Step by Step Pictures

1)Preheat oven to 180 degree C (360 degree F). Grease a baking dish with butter and set aside.  Start any making the crumble. In a bowl, take flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon and mix it well using your hands or whisk.

2)Now add in cold cubed butter into the flour and rub between your fingers to resemble breadcrumbs with chunks of butter here and there.

3)Place this crumble mix into the fridge until needed.

4)Wash, peel and core apples. Using your knife chop it into small bite size pieces.

5)Now make the filling, Take the apples in a bowl. Add in brown sugar, plain flour, salt, cinnamon in a bowl.

6)Add in vanilla extract.

7)Add in lemon juice. The lemon juice prevents the apples from getting discoloured. It also helps apples from turning brown.

8)Toss it to coat using a spoon. This is your filling.

9)Take a baking dish, spoon the apple filling into the baking dish. Top with the 15 grams of cut up butter over the apples.

10)Now sprinkle some of the crumble topping and place it into the oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes.

11)Remove the apple crumble from oven and let it sit for 15 minutes for it to set. 

12)Now scoop the apple crumble onto a serving dish. Scoop some vanilla ice cream on top and enjoy.

  • You can make the crumble a day ahead and store in fridge or freeze it for 3 months.
  • Instead of using plain flour in the apples, you can add cornstarch which thickens the apple.
  • Allow the crumble to rest for at least 30 minutes for the filling to set before serving.
  • You can use raisins in the filling and add any nuts in the crumble. 

Serving and Storage

Cooked apple crumble can be stored in the fridge for upto a week. Reheat when serving. Enjoy apple crumble with vanilla ice cream.
