Shrugging off the controversy surrounding her inclusion in India’s Asian Games team, star wushu athlete Roshibina Devi ensured the nation returned from the continental showpiece with a medal, winning silver on Thursday.
Roshibina, who lost to young Divyanshi Choudhary in the selection trials before earning a place in the team after her rival’s injury, went down 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the women’s 60kg sanda final.
Divyanshi, after being removed from the Indian team, had accused Roshibina of harassment.
It is the 25-year-old’s third Asian Games medal, having won a bronze in the 2018 edition in Jakarta-Palembang and a silver at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Roshibina had knocked out Vietnam’s 2023 world champion Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy en route to the gold medal bout.
Roshibina ensured that the Indian wushu camp had something to cheer about after a medal-less show from other contenders.
Among the other Sanda athletes, Aryan (Men’s 56kg) had lost the quarterfinals, while Aparna (Women’s 52kg) was eliminated in the round of 16.
Vikrant Baliyan (Men’s 75kg) lost his opening round.
India’s Taolu contingent couldn’t reach any podium round.
Langlentombi Devi Hanjabam put up a combined score of 18.83 across the women’s Nanquan and Nandao events, finishing in 9th place overall.
Nyeman Wangsu concluded her run in the women’s Changquan event with a final score of 9.57 and placed 15th.
Suraj Singh Mayanglambam competed in a stacked men’s Changquan final field but finished 11th.
“I have won silver earlier and this time also, I could win only silver. I couldn’t give the gold medal to the Indian people. I couldn’t give what everyone wanted. There was a lot of disturbance when I came here for the Asian Games,” Roshibina said while speaking to the media.
“I didn’t get much time to prepare. But my coach (Amit Pal) supported me a lot to reach here. I will try my best in the upcoming Games, learn from my mistakes and come back,” Roshibina added.
