I wanted to create a version that suited my taste, with flavours I absolutely love, and this recipe turned out even better than I expected. I loved it so much that it has now become something I make quite often.
About Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are one of my family favorites. Most of the time we just steam and have it. But I have made few sweets in the past using sweet potatoes like this sweet potato gulab jamun and sweet potatoes in jaggery.
I have made mashed potatoes and mashed tapioca in the past but sweet potato mash is very new to me. I really like the idea of it. So when I was developing this recipe, i wanted the sweetness of the sweet potatoes to shine.
I wanted to enhance the sweetness and incorporate good amount of butter into it as well. So I decided to go one step further and brown my butter. Because brown butter always enhances the taste of baked goods. Make sure to use salted butter which makes all the difference. Also I used honey instead of brown sugar which adds a subtle sweetness.
The combination of brown butter and honey takes this simple sweet potato mash to a whole new level. The brown butter adds a beautiful nutty, toasted flavour, while the honey brings a lovely natural sweetness that makes every spoonful irresistible.
Whether you serve it for a holiday feast or as a special side dish for your regular family meals, this mashed sweet potato will instantly elevate your table!

Step by Step Pictures
Steaming Sweet Potatoes
1)Start by steaming sweet potatoes. I like to scrub them really well, halve them and place them on a steamer basket. Steam cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the sweet potatoes is completely cooked and tender. Remove them from steamer and allow them to cool for 10 minutes so it is easy to handle. Peel off the skin from the sweet potatoes and set aside in a bowl.

Brown Butter
2)While the sweet potatoes are steaming, make the brown butter for the mashed potatoes. Take salted butter in a sauce pan. If you don’t have salted butter, you need to add salt into the mash.

3)Place on medium to low heat. Cook until the butter is completely melted.

4)Once the butter is melted, continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes on low heat until the milk solids in the butter is toasted to dark golden brown. The butter will smell nutty and turned into golden brown colour. This is your brown butter, set aside.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes
5)Now take your steamed and peeled sweet potatoes in a large bowl and use a potato masher or potato ricer to mash them completely.

6)Once potatoes is mashed, add in the honey or maple syrup, melted brown butter, vanilla extract and mix well.

7)You can taste this at this point and adjust the honey or maple syrup.

8)Now warm your milk slightly and add to the mashed potatoes little a time and mix well. It should get creamy, fluffy and thick.

9)Thats is mashed sweet potatoes are done. Taste and adjust the maple syrup.

10)Keep the mashed potatoes warm by placing it over a bowl of simmering water until ready to serve. Enjoy.
