India’s Jagsher Singh Khangurra clinched the bronze medal at the junior World Badminton Championships after losing to Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana in the boys’ singles semifinals on Friday.
Khangurra bounced back from losing the opening game to force a decider, but Wardhana’s attacking prowess proved decisive as the Indian went down 6-15, 15-13, 3-15 in 49 minutes.
Khangurra’s bronze is India’s seventh in the individual championships, taking the nation’s overall medal tally to 13, comprising one gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.
Khangurra said that improving his stamina and sharpening his attacking game would be the key lessons he takes away from the tournament.
“The match was really hard. The Indonesian guy had great stamina and really good strokes. We were playing good rallies, but I wasn’t able to convert them. In the third game, I was out of stamina after around eight points,” Khangurra said.
“Our playing styles were mostly similar, but he had more stamina, so he beat me today,” Khangurra added.
Khangurra acknowledged the need to improve his starts and patience, while admitting that his opponent’s ability to create angles and finish rallies proved decisive.
“I am satisfied with reaching the quarterfinals, but I could have done better than this. It was my first World Juniors and a really great experience. There are a few things to learn, like stamina and a more attacking game,” Khangurra said.
