Ajay Devgn and Alok Jain, Head – Hindi & English Entertainment Business (Streaming, TV and Studios), JioStar, spoke about their upcoming film, the much-awaited Drishyam The Conclusion, on day 2 of FICCI Frames 2026. The thriller releases on October 2. While both spoke about their film, they also made a larger conversation about box-office, post-Covid changes in audience trends and a lot more.
FICCI Frames 2026: Ajay Devgn: “Making a Hindi film is MORE difficult than regional or international cinema; you don’t know your target audience”
Ajay Devgn said, “I’d not like to take the credit away from international or regional cinema; it’s as difficult to make films there, but I personally feel making a Hindi film is the most difficult. You do not know what your target audience is. When you make a Punjabi film or a Telugu film or a Tamil film, you understand the audience as it’s made for a certain region. You know their tastes and hence, you’ll target accordingly.”
Ajay continued, “As for Hindi-speaking regions, the language changes every 80 to 90 kms. The thought process changes. You also need to understand the idea of mass and class audiences or cities or rural centres. So, either it’s liked by one section of the audience and the other section may not like it. As a result, the numbers don’t come (as intended).”
Ajay Devgn further said, “However, in international cinema, they know their target audience. They know that, ‘This is how they think, this is how they behave. So, we need to make a film for them’. Here, we have to target everybody. How do you cut across to everyone? Hence, it’s most difficult to write a Hindi film.”
