The Indian National Flag, or Tiranga, represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of India. Students who participate in Independence Day, Republic Day, sports events and other national programmes should understand the basic rules governing its display and handling under the Flag Code of India, 2002. The Union Home Ministry has recently reiterated the need for greater awareness of the laws, practices and conventions governing the National Flag. It has also urged states and Union territories to conduct awareness campaigns so that citizens, organisations and government agencies follow the Flag Code correctly. (Image: Pexels)
The National Flag should always occupy a position of honour and should be distinctly displayed. A damaged, soiled or dishevelled flag should not be used. Members of the public, private organisations and educational institutions may display the National Flag on all days and occasions, provided its dignity and honour are maintained. When displayed in the open or on a private residence, the flag may be flown day and night. The flag should not be flown from the same masthead simultaneously with another flag. The National Flag may be hand-spun, hand-woven or machine-made. Permitted materials include cotton, polyester, wool, silk and khadi bunting. After a ceremony, a clean and usable flag should be folded neatly and stored safely to prevent damage or soiling. Students should avoid crumpling, dragging or using the National Flag as ordinary decoration. (File Photo)
Paper flags may be used during important national, cultural and sporting occasions. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs has specifically emphasised that such flags must not be discarded or thrown on the ground after the event, reported PTI. Schools should therefore arrange for paper flags to be collected respectfully after ceremonies rather than allowing them to be scattered on roads, playgrounds or other public spaces. A damaged or soiled National Flag should not be displayed or simply thrown into a dustbin. It should be disposed of privately and in a manner consistent with the dignity of the National Flag. Students should preferably hand damaged flags to a teacher or responsible school authority so that they can be dealt with appropriately.
