Globally, several economies are now making sustainability a priority, as governments increasingly need to manage production waste and control emissions, with the European Union’s Digital Product Passport and Extended Producer Responsibility coming into effect.
While India does not have a set regulation on sustainability, the Textile Ministry and retail associations in the country are now working to build awareness and ensure consumers and producers are prepared to adopt sustainable practices and make informed decisions.
As part of such a step, CMAI, along with Re-Fiber, has initiated a post-consumer textile waste collection drive in India. Re-Fiber gives that waste a verified, traceable second life with benefits for the consumer and the planet. The aim is to dispose of unwanted clothes responsibly through a scheduled pickup or using drop-off options.
