After retiring from the Indian Foreign Service, Hardeep Singh Puri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and entered active politics. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and was re-elected in 2020.
He has held several important ministerial portfolios in the Union Government. Between 2019 and 2021, he served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs and Civil Aviation, while also handling responsibilities in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
From July 2021 to June 2024, he served as Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, along with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Following the formation of the new Union Council of Ministers in June 2024, Hardeep Singh Puri continues to serve as the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
