Indian-origin billionaire Amit Bhatia is set to become a key figure at Liverpool after leading a consortium that has agreed to buy a minority stake in the Premier League club from owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

The consortium, 1892 Holdings, also includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Reports suggest the group will acquire around one-third of Liverpool, valuing the 20-time English champions at between £5 billion ($6.8 billion) and £6 billion.

Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has extensive experience in English football. He previously served as co-owner of Championship club Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before stepping away after his Liverpool involvement became public.

Bhatia is expected to join Liverpool’s expanded board as vice-chairman, while Bezos is not expected to take up a board position. Bryan Baum, founder of venture capital firm K5 Sports, which Bezos is using for the investment, will reportedly join the board alongside Saverin’s wife Elaine.

“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield,” Bhatia said.

“To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for years to come.”

FSG president Mike Gordon said the consortium’s long-term outlook aligned with the club’s philosophy.

“As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special,” Gordon said.

FSG, which bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010, will retain majority ownership and operational control despite the investment. The deal marks Bezos’ first major investment in a professional sports team after he was previously linked with NFL franchises.

Liverpool are preparing for the new Premier League season after finishing fifth last term. They begin their campaign away to Newcastle on August 23, with the new investment potentially providing additional financial backing as the club looks to strengthen its squad.
