What Is the NMMSS Scholarship Scheme?
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is intended to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education after Class VIII. The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year to eligible Class 9 students who qualify in the selection examination conducted by the respective State or Union Territory governments.
The scholarship can subsequently be renewed from Class 10 to Class 12, subject to the prescribed academic requirements. The scheme applies to students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools.
NMMSS 2026-27: Scholarship Amount and Eligibility
Selected students receive ₹12,000 per annum, which is transferred directly to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
For appearing in the selection test, students must have obtained at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class 7. A five-percentage-point relaxation is available for SC and ST students. The annual parental income of the applicant should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
Students should also check the detailed eligibility conditions prescribed for their state or Union Territory before completing the application.
NMMSS Application 2026-27: Verification Process
Submission of the application is followed by two levels of verification on the NSP. At the first level, the application is checked by the Institute Nodal Officer (L1). It is then verified at the district level by the District Nodal Officer (L2).
Under the revised 2026-27 schedule, L1 verification must be completed by November 15, followed by L2 verification by November 30. Students who have already submitted applications should contact their school or concerned authority and make sure their forms are verified within the applicable timeline.
