India boxing legend Vijender Singh has questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for not acknowledging Indian athletes for their stellar performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying sporting achievements should be celebrated beyond political lines.

Taking to X, the Beijing Olympics medallist said neither Rahul nor the Congress has publicly congratulated the Indian contingent despite its successful campaign in Glasgow.
“Rahul Gandhi ji and the Congress Party often talk about the country’s youth, but so far, there hasn’t been a single congratulatory message or tweet from you regarding the stellar performance of India’s athletes at the Commonwealth Games 2026. When India’s youth are raising the tricolor high, it is also our collective responsibility to rise above politics and boost their morale.”

Vijender’s remarks came as India wrapped up its Commonwealth Games campaign with a fourth-place finish in the overall medal standings. The country secured 39 medals – 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze – during the Games in Glasgow.
India’s boxing team emerged as one of the standout performers, delivering one of its best-ever campaigns by winning 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver.
Celebrating the feat earlier, Vijender had praised the boxing contingent in a separate post on X.
“The baton has been passed successfully. Indian boxers at CWG 2026 won a total of 10 medals, including 7 gold and 3 silver, creating history. Heartiest congratulations to the entire team – your hard work, passion, and honor for the tricolor have held the entire nation’s head high with pride,” he wrote.

The campaign also saw Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain achieve a significant milestone. She became only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and legendary boxer MC Mary Kom to win medals at the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
Vijender himself remains one of India’s most decorated boxers. He became the country’s first Olympic boxing medallist with a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished his career with one Olympic medal, three Commonwealth Games medals and two Asian Games medals.
