Five-time champions Brazil will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Morocco on Saturday (Sunday IST). The high-voltage Group C clash between the two star-studded sides is scheduled to be played at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium). Ahead of Brazil’s opening match of the 48-team tournament, star forward Neymar Jr. took to X to share a post that has since gone viral on the internet.
The 34-year-old footballer, who holds the record for the most goals and assists for Brazil in international football, shared a picture of himself and captioned it: “Obrigado meu DEUS … obrigado por me fazer viver isso mais uma vez” (“Thank you, my GOD … thank you for letting me live this once again”).
Here’s a look:
Neymar is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, and expectations will once again be high as Brazil chase World Cup glory in 2026. The former Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Al Hilal star will wear the iconic No. 10 jersey for the five-time champions in FIFA World Cup 2026 and will be eager to help end Brazil’s 24-year wait for a sixth world title.
Neymar, who has scored eight goals in FIFA World Cup matches, last played for Brazil in 2023 and is set to miss their opening Group C fixture against Morocco.
According to Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti, Neymar is unavailable for the high-profile encounter due to fitness concerns.
Ancelotti, the first non-Brazilian to manage the most successful team in FIFA World Cup history, said on Friday (June 12) that Neymar is expected to return to training next week.
The Brazilian forward suffered a right calf injury in mid-May.
“Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible,” Ancelotti said on Friday.
“We called him up not only for his football ability, which is indisputable, but also for the experience and example he can provide to the younger players in the squad,” he added.
After facing Morocco, the team that finished fourth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Brazil will take on Haiti on Friday (Saturday, June 20 IST) in their second Group C match. Their final group-stage fixture is scheduled against Andy Robertson-led Scotland on Wednesday (Thursday, June 25 IST).
