Karnataka’s record-breaking PUC results have been clouded by a shocking error, as a student awarded 111 marks in a 100-mark exam, raised serious questions over evaluation accuracy

While the 2025-26 Second PUC results have been hailed as one of the best in recent years, the unexpected marking error has cast a shadow over the achievement.
The results of the Second PUC examinations for the 2025-26 academic year have been officially announced, marking a significant academic milestone. This year’s performance has been described as historic, with an overall improvement of nearly 13% compared to the previous year.
Udupi district emerged as the top performer across Karnataka, reflecting strong academic outcomes across streams.
Strong Performance Across Streams
According to Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, the results this year have set new benchmarks. The pass percentages across streams indicate a consistent upward trend:
- Arts: 71%
- Commerce: 88%
- Science: 92%
The data highlights particularly strong results in the Science and Commerce streams, contributing to the overall record-breaking outcome.
Girls Outshine Boys Once Again
Female students have once again outperformed their male counterparts. Out of 3,53,742 girls who appeared for the examination, 3,13,770 successfully passed, resulting in an impressive pass percentage of 88.70%.
This continued trend underscores the growing academic excellence among female students in the state.
Major Error Sparks Confusion And Concern
Despite the celebratory mood surrounding the results, a significant error by the examination board has sparked confusion and criticism. In an unusual and alarming case, a student was awarded 111 marks in a subject where the maximum possible score is 100.
The mistake has raised serious questions about the accuracy and reliability of the evaluation and result compilation process.
How Did The Error Occur?
The student in question had appeared for the examination as a repeater, aiming to improve previous scores. According to the marksheet, the student secured 94 marks in the Hindi theory paper and was also awarded 17 internal assessment marks by the college.
However, instead of capping the total at 100, the board incorrectly added the scores to display a total of 111 marks, while also marking the student as ‘pass’. This glaring oversight has left both the student and family shocked.
Students And Parents Demand Accountability
The incident has triggered widespread concern among students and parents, many of whom are questioning how such a serious error could occur in an official examination system.
Doubts have been raised over whether the mistake lies in the theory marks, the internal assessment, or the final calculation process. Parents have expressed frustration, arguing that such lapses could potentially impact students’ academic records and future opportunities.
Questions Over System Reliability
The controversy has also led to broader concerns about the functioning of the examination board. Critics argue that errors of this magnitude undermine trust in a system that is expected to handle results with precision and accountability.
There is growing demand for a thorough review of the evaluation process and for authorities to identify those responsible for the lapse.
A Record Year Overshadowed By A Blunder
While the 2025-26 Second PUC results have been hailed as one of the best in recent years, the unexpected marking error has cast a shadow over the achievement.
As students celebrate their success, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy and transparency in academic assessments, especially when they play a crucial role in shaping young futures.
